In the summer of 2014, the Golden Gate Men’s Chorus embarked on an extraordinary journey halfway around the world to Riga, Latvia, to participate in the World Choir Games—one of the largest international gatherings of choral singers in the world.

For GGMC, the journey to Riga was about much more than competition. It was an opportunity to represent San Francisco and the United States within an international community of singers—to encounter ensembles from around the world, experience different musical traditions, and discover the extraordinary ability of choral music to create connection across languages, cultures, and borders.

The experience has become an important part of GGMC’s history. The singers, repertoire, and circumstances belong to a particular moment in the life of the organization, but the qualities at the heart of the story remain familiar: a commitment to musical excellence, a willingness to take on ambitious challenges, and a belief in the power of voices joined together.
